Repair or replace? How to decide on an appliance in Abu Dhabi
When an appliance breaks down, the honest answer to "should I fix it or buy a new one?" depends on three things: what has actually failed, how old the machine is, and what the repair costs against a replacement. Here is a practical way to think about it.
Repairs that are usually worth doing
- Washing machine: pump, drain hose, door seal, door lock, drive belt, heater, inlet valve, brushes.
- Fridge: thermostat or sensor, evaporator or condenser fan, defrost heater/timer, door seals, dust-clogged coils.
- Dishwasher: drain pump, inlet valve, door seal, heating element, spray arms, filter housing.
- Dryer: heating element, thermostats, belt, drum rollers, condenser pump, moisture sensor, heat-exchanger cleaning.
- These are targeted repairs with reasonably priced parts, and they typically restore years of use.
Repairs where replacement is often the better call
- Drum bearing failure on a front-load washer that is already 8+ years old. The job is large because the drum is sealed on many models.
- Compressor or sealed refrigerant-system failure on an older fridge.
- Control-board failure on a budget machine where the board costs a large share of a new appliance.
- Any major fault on a machine that has already had two or three unrelated repairs.
A rough rule of thumb
If the repair costs less than about a third of a comparable new appliance and the machine is under roughly eight years old, repair usually makes sense. It is cheaper, faster, and keeps a working appliance out of landfill.
As the repair cost climbs toward half the price of a replacement, or the appliance is older and out of warranty, replacement starts to win. There is no exact formula, but those two ratios frame the decision.
A diagnosis tells you exactly what has failed and what it costs to put right, so you are deciding with real numbers. If we think replacement is the sensible option, we will say so.
